Before you start taking a new medicine, you need to obtain the following information from your provider or pharmacist:

  • The name of the medicine and how it helps you.
  • Food and drink instructions.  Should you take the medication with food or on an empty stomach? What type of drink should you take with the medication? What food and drinks should you avoid when taking the medication? Should you avoid consuming alcohol while taking this medication?
  • The amount of the medication and the time of day that you take the medication.
  • The side effects that you may experience when taking the medication and what you should do if you experience side effects.
  • Medication interaction effects. How will this medication interact with other medications you are taking?
  • The proper storage directions for the medications.
  • Instructions on what to do if you miss a dose of your medications.
  • Other special instructions.  Will this medication make you drowsy? Should you avoid operating cars or machinery while taking this medication? Is the medication habit-forming or addictive?

REMEMBER - You should let your VA health care provider know if you have a history of drug allergies or serious reactions caused by any medicine.

REMEMBER - You should not stop taking your medication or change the dose on your own. Always speak with your provider before making any changes in your medication schedule.

REMEMBER - Learn the medication refill procedures and submit refill requests at least 2 weeks before you are out of medications.

REMEMBER  -  Do not take another person’s medications.
