The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) recently selected Houston resident Theodore “Ted” Pantallion as its Volunteer of the Year. Pantallion has given 2,170 volunteer hours assisting the Prime Care Outpatient Clinic as well as the Voluntary Service Office as a volunteer for the past two years.

He takes his volunteer duties to heart and is most committed to helping Veterans in the Prime Care Clinic. He trains Veterans in the Care Coordinator Home Telehealth Program as well as educating patients on how to monitor their diabetes, hypertension, congested heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease . 

“He really makes sure Veterans understand the messages we are trying to convey, and he puts his volunteer job first; doing whatever he needs to do to get the job done,” said Anne Utech, Ph.D., RD, former MEDVAMC Health Promotion & Disease Prevention Program manager. 

Pantallion works with Voluntary Service to help organize and set-up the new volunteer orientation, which is held twice a month, by contacting the potential volunteers and scheduling them to attend orientation. He informs new volunteers of the “Do’s and Don’ts” of the program and also insures the volunteers understand HIPPA, privacy, and security awareness.

In addition, Pantallion always finds time to help with special events such as: VA2K walk, National Salute to Veteran Patients, Annual BBQ events, and any other special events they host.  “Ted can make people smile by walking into a room. He has this get-up-and-go, willing and wanting to attitude and everyone around him feels it,” said Bryan J. Dyck, MEDVAMC Voluntary Service Program manager. “He has an upbeat attitude that’s contiguous to other Veterans by helping them keep their spirits up.”

“As a Veteran myself, I enjoy helping other Veterans in any way that I can.  I take to heart seeing the smiles on Veterans’ faces once they learn that I am a volunteer and here to give back. Volunteering is one of the best things I have ever done and I absolutely love it,” said Pantallion. 

It is because of his incredible attitude and for his dedication to Veterans that Pantallion was chosen as the MEDVAMC Volunteer of the Year.
