MEDVAMC Prescription Refill Instructions
When your health care provider orders a new prescription, Pharmacy Service will mail it to you. Refills are always sent by mail except for items requiring constant refrigeration. To avoid the risk of running out of medicine, it is recommended that you order your refills the same day you receive them so that you receive them in the mail at least 2 weeks before you need them. There are several easy and fast ways to receive your medications from the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center:
Automated Telephone Refill System – Fastest Easiest Way!
The MEDVAMC Pharmacy’s Automated Telephone Prescription Refill System is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. The telephone number is (713) 794-7648 or toll-free 1 (800) 454-1062. You will need a touch-tone phone, your social security number, and your prescription number. Your prescription number is located on the top left corner of your prescription container. Please note that not all phones are touch-tone compatible. If you attempt to access the automated telephone refill system and have trouble, please check your telephone for touch tones.
By Internet Access
Prescriptions may also be filled online using VA's My HealtheVet program. You will need a user ID and password to log in. If you do not have one, you can easily get one by creating your personal profile.
By Mail
You may mail in the refill request forms that you received with your prescriptions when they were filled by Pharmacy. This method takes longer to process and receive your prescription refills because of postal delivery processing time.
By Mail when Refill Slips Are Not Available
To request refills when you do not have the computerized refill slip, just mail us your request in the form of a letter. This letter should contain your complete name, social security number, and the prescription number or name of medication. Mail your request to MEDVAMC 580/119, 2002 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77030-4298.
By Drop-Off Box
For those patients who just need to drop their refill requests off and do not need to speak with the pharmacy staff, three (3) drop boxes are available throughout the hospital. One drop box is located to the right of the rotating doors as you enter the hospital. A second drop box is located in front of Prime Care Clinic #3 (Space Team Room CIA-300). The third drop box is located at the Greeter’s desk located in the Outpatient Pharmacy waiting room.
Hours of Operation
The MEDVAMC Outpatient Pharmacy is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. On Saturdays, the hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The pharmacy is closed on Sundays and most federal holidays.
When your health care provider orders a new prescription, Pharmacy Service will mail it to you. If you wish to pick up your new prescription at the pharmacy, you will now need to report to the pharmacy check in window and let a pharmacy staff member know you would rather wait to pick up your prescriptions. Refills are always sent by mail except for items requiring constant refrigeration.
Pharmacy Telephone Helpline
If you are having trouble using the automated refill line, the MEDVAMC Pharmacy Telephone Helpline is available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. by dialing (713) 791-1414, extension 2421 or (713) 794-7653. Pharmacy staff is available to answer any questions you have concerning how to order your refills and any questions concerning your medications. The helpline is NOT a refill line.
