DeBakey VA Celebrates 7th Birthday of Child Born during Tropical Storm Allison

June 18, 2008

WHEN: Wednesday, June 18, 2008, noon
WHERE:    Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center
Executive Boardroom, 4th Floor
2002 Holcombe Blvd.
Houston, Texas 77030

In June 2001, when Kimberly Young attempted to get to the hospital to deliver her second child, she was unable to reach her original destination due to flooded streets and rising water in the Texas Medical Center. Tropical Storm Allison maneuvered her and her husband, Keith Wayne Young, Jr., to the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) where surgeons and other support staff delivered their little baby girl. The Youngs commemorated the location of the baby’s birth by naming her Asia VA Keithera Young.

Local VA officials believe Baby Asia VA is only the third birth at the medical center in its 60-year history of caring for veterans in Southeast Texas.  In January 1961 during an ice storm, a baby boy named Johnny was delivered in the Houston VA’s Emergency Room (ER). Then in December 1989, the ER director at the time, Anthony J. Zollo, Jr., M.D., delivered a baby girl named Shanna outside the ER in a taxi. Zollo continued his career with the MEDVAMC and is now the Care Line Executive at the Charles Wilson VA Outpatient Clinic in Lufkin.

In honor of this special child’s birth, the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center will host a birthday party on June 18, 2008 from noon to 1 p.m.
