September 21, 2005

Clinics involved include Houston, Galveston,
Texas City, and Beaumont.

HOUSTON – In response to the approach of Hurricane Rita toward the Texas Gulf Coast, the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) has cancelled all outpatient clinic appointments in Houston, Galveston, Texas City, and Beaumont on Thursday, September 22, 2005 and Friday, September 23, 2005. The Charles Wilson VA Outpatient Clinic in Lufkin will remain operational during this time.

All veterans who do not require acute medical attention should follow evacuation orders given by local city and county governments. Veterans who need medical advice should call the VA Network Telecare Center Hotline at (713) 794-8985 or toll-free 1-800-639-5137. Registered nurses, pharmacists, and administrative clerks at the VA Network Telecare Center are ready to answer veteran health care questions 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The VA Network Telecare Center is not for life-threatening emergencies. Veterans with life-threatening emergencies should immediately call 911.

The MEDVAMC should not be considered as an evacuation shelter option; it is not authorized to function as a shelter.

The MEDVAMC is currently preparing the facility and grounds for extreme weather, stocking all necessary fuel, water, food, medications, and supplies, and making arrangements for essential staff to be on hand to meet the health care needs of critically ill inpatients.
