Lufkin VA Outpatient Clinic Closes in Anticipation of Flooding

LUFKIN, TX - In response to expected flooding and poor road conditions in the path of Hurricane Gustav, the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) has cancelled all outpatient appointments at the Charles Wilson VA Outpatient Clinic, located at 1301 Frank Avenue in Lufkin, on Tuesday, September 2, 2008.

The bus transporting veterans from Lufkin to the medical center in Houston will also not run on Tuesday, September 2, 2008.

The Beaumont VA Outpatient Clinic, located at 3420 Veterans Circle, is closed until further notice because of a mandatory evacuation for all of Orange and Jefferson counties.

The MEDVAMC encourages all veterans and their family members to keep current with weather conditions. Visit www.houston.va.gov/emergency/emergency_preparedness.asp or www.hurricanes.gov/prepare for emergency preparedness tips, useful Web sites and telephone numbers, suggestions for a disaster supplies kit, and more. All veterans are strongly advised to follow evacuation orders given by local city and county governments.

Veterans with urgent care needs requiring continuing care may contact any VA facility by dialing 1-800-507-4571. This phone number may also be used by families and friends requiring information about patients from those VA facilities affected by Hurricane Gustav. Veterans may call with questions such as where to access health care, how to receive their prescription drugs, or any other concerns they may have about their care.

If you have a life-threatening emergency, immediately call 911.  Veterans who need medical advice may also call the VA Network Telecare Center Hotline at (713) 794-8985 or toll-free 1-800-639-5137. Registered nurses, pharmacists, and administrative clerks at the VA Network Telecare Center are ready to answer veteran health care questions 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The VA Network Telecare Center is not for life-threatening emergencies.

All VA employees in the path of Hurricane Gustav are required to check in with their status, location, and contact information by calling 1-866-233-0152. Operators are available from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. You may call as soon as you have made evacuation plans and have contact information available or within 48 hours of the hurricane.
