VA Nurse Honored for Care to Veterans
November 1, 2013
A nurse at the Michael E. DeBakey’s VA Medical Center’s (MEDVAMC), Texas City Outpatient Veterans Clinic, was honored for her exceptional care to military Veterans in a special surprise presentation. Congressman Randy Weber (R-14 District), visited the Texas City Clinic to present Thelma Johnson-Leathers, RN, with a flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol in her honor.
“Our nation’s military are fortunate to have such a compassionate, dedicated person to care for them,” said Cong. Weber. “One of Thelma’s Veteran patients relayed to me several incredible stories about her extraordinary commitment to Veterans. Her devotion to service and care for all of her patients is inspiring and I am proud to present her with this special flag.”
Johnson-Leathers, who has been a VA nurse for more than 23 years, was nominated for the award by Simon Urbanic, a Navy Veteran from League City, TX. Urbanic credits Johnson-Leathers with helping him turn his health around. “Thelma truly cares about all the Veterans she treats,” he said. “She took a personal interest in helping me lower my cholesterol and getting my health under control. She was with me every step of the way and was as thrilled as I was to see my numbers and my health improve. I can’t say enough about the excellent health care I receive from Thelma and everyone at the VA.”
For her part, Johnson-Leathers feels it is her honor and privilege to serve as a VA nurse. “My father and my father-in-law were Veterans,” she said. “Taking care of the men and women who have served in the military is my way of giving back. I feel very lucky.”
