HOUSTON, TX - Houston VA Medical Center (HVAMC) physician Rabih O. Darouiche, M.D., has been selected by the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) to receive the SHEA Investigator Award for his successful pursuits in disease prevention.

The award is directed toward young physicians who have been practicing medicine for under fifteen years. The award consists of a $2500 grant, a commemorative plaque, and recognition at the SHEA annual meeting in Arlington, Virginia held April 5, 2003.

Recipients are chosen based on the caliber of abstracts of scientific work they submit to SHEA. SHEA has rated Daroiuche's work as "exemplary." Reducing medical device-related infections is a key goal for Darouiche, and he aggressively pursues solutions that directly influence the quality of patient care. Inside Houston magazine listed him as one of the top physicians in the city of Houston. Darouiche works in the spinal cord injury and medical care service lines at the HVAMC.
