Listed as one of the best doctors in the nation in the field of cardiology, Anita Deswal, M.D., M.P.H. is a staff cardiologist at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. She has special expertise in echocardiography and heart failure. Deswal is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease. Her principal research area of interest is heart failure; specifically, clinical trials and outcomes research in patients with heart failure. Her recent research has focused on studying the epidemiology and outcomes of patients with diastolic heart failure. She is currently conducting a single-center trial examining the role of aldosterone antagonism in the treatment of diastolic heart failure. Deswal's research also focuses on racial disparities and quality of care delivered to patients with heart failure. She is a member of National Executive Committee for the VA Chronic Heart Failure Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (CHF QUERI), an initiative of the Department of Veterans Affairs to improve the translation of findings from clinical trials into clinical practice. She received her medical degree from All India Institute of Medical Sciences in India, and did her residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at University of Pittsburgh. Deswal is also an associate professor of Department of Medicine – Cardiology at Baylor College of Medicine, Winters Center for Heart Failure Research.
