Listed as one of the best doctors in the nation in the field of psychiatry, Mark E. Kunik, M.D., M.P.H., a psychiatrist in the Mental Health Care Line at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center meets with Army Veteran Hubert McCarty (middle) and his daughter, Wanda Shedd, during a recent visit. Kunik has also been recognized by US News & World Report and Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. as among the top ten percent of doctors in the nation in the field of geriatric psychiatry. He is a professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine. Kunik is a practicing geropsychiatrist at the MEDVAMC and has conducted extensive clinical and health services research on dementia. He has worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life for people with dementia, both as a caring physician to his patients and as a researcher who has published more than 50 papers on dementia-related issues alone. After serving as the director of the Geropsychiatry Service at the MEDVAMC from 1993 to 1999, Kunik received an Advanced Research Career Development Award and moved to the VA’s Houston Center for Quality of Care & Utilization Studies (HCQCUS) to further his research efforts on behalf of those with dementia. In addition to being a physician investigator and associate director at HCQCUS, Kunik also serves as associate director for Research Training for the South Center VA Healthcare Network and co-director for the VA’s Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center’s Special Fellowship Program in Advanced Psychiatry and Psychology.
