Mission: The purpose of the PGY1/PGY2/MS Health-System Pharmacy Administration residency at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center is to develop pharmacy leaders who are prepared to immediately assume a manager or assistant director level position within the Veterans Health Administration and eventually become a Chief of Pharmacy, VISN Pharmacy Executive, or National Pharmacy Executive.

 

Requirements for Completion of Residency

  • Successful completion of all PGY1 requirements
  • Research project
    • Poster presentation at ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting
    • Podium presentation at the Alcalde residency conference
    • Thesis defense and completion of the manuscript requirements from the MS in Pharmacy Leadership and Administration program
    • Research to be submitted in manuscript form for journal publication
  • Staffing requirements (outpatient, inpatient, and clinical)
  • Formal presentations and journal clubs
  • Completion of MS in Pharmacy Administration and Leadership at University of Houston

Practice Management Experiences

  • Involvement in pharmacy management meetings
  • Projects to improve the medication use process
  • Involvement in pharmacoeconomic cost savings measures
  • Presentation to Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee

Salary and Benefits

  • PGY1 Salary: about $46,000; PGY2 Salary: about $50,000
  • 13 days (vacation and sick leave)

  • Graduate from an ACPE-accredited Doctor of Pharmacy program
  • Participate in an on-site interview, presentation, and clinical case review
