FREE Flu Shots for Veterans!

Tuesday, September 29, 2015

It's time to get your flu shot. Veterans enrolled in VA health care can get a free flu shot at the Houston VA and community-based outpatient clinics.

What is the flu?

Flu – short for influenza – is a respiratory illness that spreads easily from person to person. Flu vaccination is your best protection against the flu, which usually begins in the fall and can continue through late spring. Everyone age 6 months and older should get the vaccine.

Why should I get a flu shot?

The flu is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death.  An annual flu vaccine is the best way to reduce the chances that you will get seasonal flu and spread it to others.  When more people get vaccinated against the flu, less flu can spread.

Where do I get my shot?

We have several easy ways for Veterans to get vaccinated:
     • Ask for a free flu shot at any scheduled appointment
     • Walk in to any clinic at Houston VA and ask for a flu shot
     • Visit your local community-based outpatient clinic.

Many questions about the vaccination can be answered by reading the Vaccination Information Sheet from the Centers for Disease Control. For more information, visit www.publichealth.va.gov/flu/index.asp, or ask your provider.
