Silver Eagles Team Bring Home Medals
Twenty-three Veterans from the Houston area recently participated in the 30th National Veterans Golden Age Games in Detroit, Michigan. The Silver Eagles Team brought home 14 gold, 4 silver, and 5 bronze medals.
The National Veterans Golden Age Games is a national multi-event sports and recreational seniors’ competition program designed to improve the quality of life for all older Veterans, promote physical fitness, endurance including those with a wide range of abilities and disabilities. The games are open to U.S. military Veterans, ages 55 or older, who are currently receiving care at a VA medical facility.
There’s power behind the physical act of sports than can be therapeutic and preventative when it comes to health. This annual event gets older Veterans together to give them a new challenge, and in effect builds the same camaraderie instilled in service – something difficult to recreate once the uniform comes off.
“We are excited that 12 Veterans brought medals home to Houston this year,” said Recreation Therapist and Golden Age Games Coach Rochelle Myles. ““Everyone had a great time during the competitions, plus the Veterans thoroughly enjoyed seeing the city of Detroit and the camaraderie of Veterans from all over the U.S., District of Colombia, and Guam.”
The other coaches for the MEDVAMC Silver Eagles Team were Jemarques Handy and Solomon Green.
